Why Experience Still Matters in an AI World

AI has changed an enormous amount in a very short time. It can write copy, generate ideas, analyse information, produce code and offer suggestions about almost anything. For small businesses in particular, it can be an incredibly useful tool.

But there’s a distinction that is becoming increasingly important: having access to information isn’t the same as having experience.

Experience still matters.

AI Can Tell You How. It Can’t Always Tell You Whether.

One of the problems I increasingly see is people asking AI how to do something and assuming that the answer must therefore be the right thing to do. That’s a dangerous leap. AI can provide instructions. But it doesn’t necessarily understand the context in which those instructions are being applied.

For example, a WordPress change that sounds perfectly sensible in isolation could have unintended consequences for your theme, plugins, SEO, accessibility or existing functionality. Knowing how to make a change isn’t the same as knowing whether you should make it.

Experience Gives You Context

When you’ve worked in an industry for decades, you accumulate knowledge that isn’t always written down. You remember what went wrong last time. You recognise patterns. You know which shortcuts tend to cause problems. You understand the difference between something that is technically possible and something that is actually sensible.

That context is incredibly valuable.

Information Isn’t The Same As Judgement

AI can give you ten possible solutions. An experienced professional can look at those solutions and say, ‘Actually, none of those is appropriate here.’ That’s judgement. It’s knowing what information matters, what can be ignored, and which apparently small detail could completely change the recommendation.

AI can certainly help with that process. It can give you options to consider and help you research unfamiliar areas. But someone still needs to evaluate those options.

This Matters Particularly For Small Businesses

Large organisations often have specialists for everything. A small business owner doesn’t. You’re the marketing department, IT department, finance department and customer service department all at once.

It’s completely understandable that you turn to AI for help. Use it to brainstorm. Use it to organise your thoughts. Use it to speed up repetitive tasks. Use it to help you understand unfamiliar terminology.

Just don’t confuse convenience with expertise.

Your Experience Is An Asset Too

There’s another side to this conversation. You don’t have to be a technical expert to have valuable knowledge. If you’ve run your business for ten years, you know things about your customers that an AI system doesn’t.

  • You know the questions they ask.
  • You know why they choose you.
  • You know what goes wrong.
  • You know what makes people happy.

That’s expertise.

Use AI to help you communicate that knowledge, not to replace it.
