Everyday Skills to Improve Your Business

I’m all about empowering people. Sometimes that’s just about reminding people of the skills they already have. So let’s have a look at all the everyday skills that you already have, that can help enhance your small business.

Everyday Skills, Everyday Value

Flexibility

Think about the flexibility of thought and action that you display daily just getting through life. Pivoting from careful plans to spontaneous action when things don’t go to plan. Making lemons out of lemonade. Think back to a time when you were able to flex a situation in your own life to resolve an issue.

The ability to swap out pantry ingredients when you’re short, and still produce a great dinner shows ingenuity and the ability to think on your feet. In business, the ability to pivot is one of the most useful and lucrative skills you can have. Covid-19 has proven this. Who else pivoted in business during this time? I sure did – from predominantly photography jobs to a lot more digital work!

When life gives you lemons

Think Creatively

Whether you are the king or queen of crafting, or appreciate the nuances of music and art, your right-brain creativity is an under-utilised asset you already have.

Use your creative side to brainstorm marketing ideas, define your USPs (unique selling points), to help you stand out from the crowd. Or use your creativity as a hobby to help you relax. A relaxed mind is a productive one.

Keep your creativity flowing

Social Media

The likelihood is that you are on some form of social media for personal use. This might not seem like much of a skill, but think about these factors:

  • Social media usage provides you with many skills you can transfer to running social media channels for your business. Creating exciting captions, taking photos that pop, and understanding hashtags.
  • Do you already have friends and followers online? Here’s a ready made audience for your product, and valuable cheerleaders for your endeavours.
  • Are you used to the mechanics of social media? Do you understand what each platform does and how to use it? You have no idea how valuable these basic skills already are.

If you’re not already on social media, you probably have a family member that is, and who is willing to teach you. Lean into these resources and embrace social media – your business will thank you!

TIP: Social Media can also be an amazing support network… but only if you use it right!

Resilience

Life will knock your down, and so will the business world. But having resilience in the face of challenges can be a lifeline.

STOP, take a breath, and regroup. Like in life, these things will pass. It is time for pragmatism, strategy and using that creativity I mentioned above.
