Social Media Tips for your Small Business

You don’t have to be an ‘influencer’ to make social media work for your small business

We’ve all seen social media ‘influencers’ who make a living off their endorsement of products. It’s an intimidating world of numbers and followers validating your social media presence. But don’t worry, as a small business, you don’t have to worry about those behemoths, you just to have to make sure you know your audience, and are engaging with them.

Here are some easy social media tips for your small business:

Stop worrying about numbers:

Did you know that people with millions of followers often have a really low engagement rate? That’s because the more followers you have means it’s harder to keep up with them. So, actually, a big following doesn’t necessarily mean an engaged and receptive community.

If you only have 200 followers, but you chat to them daily / weekly and they help to promote your services through social shares and promotion, then that’s 200 people that are helping your small business.

Post regularly and consistently

I can’t emphasise this enough, but regular and consistent posting on social media is so important. If you can’t post regularly, there are plenty of ways to schedule your content in advance, so it doesn’t have to be a daily burden.

Involve people in your journey

You’re a human, and people like when humanity and business meet. Yes, you need to show the service or product you are selling, be professional, and deliver on expectations. But it’s also important to be relatable. That doesn’t mean flooding your instagram feed with selfies (in fact, don’t do that)… but when posting photos of your product, talk about your personal perspective / story / excitement in the caption. P.s. The occasional selfie is ok, by the way, just don’t be self-indulgent with it.

Post colourful, engaging content

WHAT you choose to post on social media IS important. It helps you hone your brand, it lets people learn about your products or services, and if you are utilising facebook ads etc., it captures peoples’ attention! We live in a scrolling culture – people are getting more adept at digesting information while scrolling, and it’s important you grab their attention. Depending on which channel you are using, videos can be an important addition to your social media arsenal. You don’t need expensive equipment, you can make videos on your phone!
